{"id":1201,"date":"2020-12-30T19:44:47","date_gmt":"2020-12-30T19:44:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.com\/ethiopia\/?p=1201"},"modified":"2020-12-30T19:44:47","modified_gmt":"2020-12-30T19:44:47","slug":"ethiopian-woman-who-became-a-symbol-of-integration-in-italy-is-hammered-to-death","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/ethiopia\/all-news\/ethiopian-woman-who-became-a-symbol-of-integration-in-italy-is-hammered-to-death","title":{"rendered":"Ethiopian woman who became a symbol of integration in Italy is &#8216;hammered to death"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Africa-Press Ethiopia<\/p>\n<p>An Ethiopian migrant who became a symbol of integration in Italy by building a thriving cheese business in the Alpine countryside has been killed on her farm, police said.<\/p>\n<p>A Ghanaian employee on the farm in northern Italy has confessed to killing 42-year-old Agitu Ideo Gudeta before raping her as she lay dying, Italian media says.<\/p>\n<p>The suspect, 32-year-old Adams Suleimani, is said to have killed her with a hammer in a dispute over an unpaid salary.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1213\" src=\"https:\/\/static.africa-press.net\/ethiopia\/sites\/50\/2020\/12\/37411636-9099181-image-a-10_1609340509645.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"634\" height=\"423\" srcset=\"https:\/\/static.africa-press.net\/ethiopia\/sites\/50\/2020\/12\/37411636-9099181-image-a-10_1609340509645.jpg 634w, https:\/\/static.africa-press.net\/ethiopia\/sites\/50\/2020\/12\/37411636-9099181-image-a-10_1609340509645-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 634px) 100vw, 634px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Gudeta, who fled Ethiopia in 2010, had made her home in the Valle dei Mocheni and was seen as a shining migrant success story at a time of rising hostility towards immigrants in Italy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Gudeta was renowned for making goat&#8217;s cheese and beauty products on her farm La Capra Felice &#8211; the Happy Goat &#8211; which was built on previously abandoned land.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">&#8216;I created my space and made myself known, there was no resistance to me,&#8217; she told Reuters in a 2018 interview.<\/p>\n<div>\n<div id=\"p-20\" class=\"related-carousel with-fb-or-tw news half\" data-track-module=\"am-related_carousel^related_carousel\" data-track-selector=\".rotator-panels a:not([class*=external])\" data-dm-rotator-rotate=\"false\" data-track-pos=\"static\" data-preferred-shared-network-enabled=\"\" data-dm-rotator-auto-init=\"\" data-dm-rotator-active-class=\"active\" data-dm-rotator-page-count=\"1.0\" data-dm-social-article-auto-init=\"\" data-dm-rotator-page-size=\"1\">\n<div class=\"rotator bdrcc\">\n<div class=\"rotator-title\">\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">However, the same year she revealed that she had received racial threats, and earlier this year a man was jailed for nine months for injuring Gudeta.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">According to news agency Ansa, that man was initially questioned by Italian carabinieri over Gudeta&#8217;s death but was found to have no connection.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Instead, Suleimani was apprehended overnight and taken into custody after confessing to killing Gudeta, it is believed.<\/p>\n<div class=\"artSplitter mol-img-group\">\n<div class=\"mol-img\">\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Gudeta had escaped from Addis Ababa in 2010 after angering local authorities by taking part in protests against government &#8216;land-grabbing&#8217;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Activists including Gudeta had accused the authorities of setting aside large swathes of farmland for foreign investors.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">On reaching Italy, she was able to use the common land in the northern mountains to build her new enterprise.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Starting off with 15 goats, she had 180 by 2018 when she became a well-known figure.<\/p>\n<div class=\"artSplitter mol-img-group\">\n<div class=\"mol-img\">\n<p>The Ethiopian Peoples\u2019 Revolutionary Democracy Front (EPRDF) controlled the federal government for 23 years following the establishment of the federation. The Front was a coalition of four parties representing Oromia, Amhara, SNNPRS, and Tigray. It was a coalition led by people who designed the constitution and the federal arrangement.<\/p>\n<p>It created a status quo that allowed these four regions to decide and enforce rules on the other regions. The other five were led by what is referred to as \u2018partner\u2019 parties; almost always following the decisions made by the EPRDF. This institutionalized in a new federal setting the traditional center-to-periphery relations of dominance and discrimination.<\/p>\n<p>The Tigray Peoples\u2019 Liberation Front (TPLF) is the oldest and most powerful group in the EPRDF, representing Tigray, which constitutes around six percent of Ethiopia\u2019s population. The late leader of TPLF\/EPRDF, Meles Zenawi, once said that \u201cRevolutionary Democracy, the ideology of the ruling Front, is not compatible to pastoralist lifestyles\u201d in explaining why ruling parties of five other regions did not join the coalition.<\/p>\n<p>Years later, the TPLF has become the final victim of the center-to-periphery relationship it has dictated institutionally in the previous decades. The political transition from TPLF-influenced EPRDF to the Oromo-influenced Prosperity Party (PP) in 2018 was, for example, a work of cooperation between the ruling EPRDF parties in Oromia and Amhara.
