Africa-Press – Ethiopia. <\/strong><\/span>The Government of Ethiopia has intensified its effort in providing humanitarian assistance for people facing food shortages due to natural and man-made problems, according to the Government Communication Service.<\/p>\n

Briefing the media today, Government Communication Service Minister Legesse Tulu noted that there is food shortage in various parts of the country due to the untimely rain and lack of peace and stability.<\/p>\n

To alleviate this, the government has intensified its efforts in providing emergency assistance for those who need urgent help, he said.<\/p>\n

Accordingly, the government has provided emergency humanitarian assistance for 7.3 million people affected by drought and conflict.<\/p>\n

So far, 798,607 quintals of food items worth 6.4 billion Birr have been distributed to 3.7 million people; and 1.5 million Birr financial support to 3.6 million needy persons, the minister explained.<\/p>\n

Moreover, humanitarian assistance has been given in two rounds in Amhara, Tigray, and Oromia regions, he stated, adding that the regional governments are working hard to solve the food shortage.<\/p>\n

The minister stated that the federal government has been exerting maximum effort to solve the problem in a sustainable way by using irrigation and other agricultural options.<\/p>\n

The minister further disclosed that the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) chaired by Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Affairs Demeke Mekonnen will hold a meeting tomorrow.<\/p>\n

The Council is expected to review and evaluate Ethiopia’s situation with regard to risk and disasters, the problems faced, and set direction.<\/p>\n

The Council will also discuss Ethiopia’s capability to provide humanitarian aid in sustainable ways on its own, and the opportunities and options available to solve the problem.<\/p>\n

Legesse pointed out that the assertion by some humanitarian institutions that the drought in Ethiopia has turned into famine meets neither national and international standards nor is it confirmed by anybody.<\/p>\n

According to the minister, it is only the Council that can make a decision on the issue and the direction it sets will be announced to the public.<\/p>\n

He underscored that the \u201cgovernment firmly believes that the provision of food aid and politics should not be mixed\u201d, adding that making aid a political issue and placing it as a condition for humanitarian aid is unacceptable.<\/p>\n

The request of some humanitarian organizations to replace the government administrative bodies violates Ethiopia’s sovereignty and is completely unacceptable.<\/p>\n

He emphasized that NGOs should respect the laws and sovereignty of the country.<\/p>\n
