Africa-Press – Ethiopia. <\/strong><\/span>Ethiopia\u2019s rich heritages are important assets to promote and attract development and investment, National Heritage Restitution Committee Member Alula Pankhurst said.<\/p>\n

Ethiopia has now become the number one country in the African continent with 11 world heritage sites, including the recent two more additional sites.<\/p>\n

In an exclusive interview, Alula noted that heritages play a key role in the nation as Ethiopia is a country with very long history, and rich heritage sites in different parts of the country.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is important not to forget the importance of culture and heritage as a form of identity and the form of resource that is extremely important for development, tourism and the future of the country.\u201d<\/p>\n

According to Alula, culture and heritage play a key role in Ethiopia which has a very long history, very rich heritages in different parts of the country from the North to the South, and East to West.<\/p>\n

Heritage is part of attraction for tourism, important element of culture, history, identity and future of the country, he said, adding that it is also a resource which is extremely important for the development of arts and crafts of the nation.<\/p>\n

Heritage is also part of the attraction for development and investment that needs to be preserved and promoted much more, he elaborated.<\/p>\n

Alula stressed that since much of Africa’s heritages are still abroad in museums in Europe and America, the efforts to bring back heritages need to be strengthened.<\/p>\n

Ethiopian heritages were in particular looted at the time of Mekdela expedition in 1868 and then during the fascist Italian occupation from 1935 to 1941, he pointed out.<\/p>\n

With a few objects returned from the Mekdela period, there is a big need for diplomacy. Only two major objects, namely the Lion of Judah Statue and Aksum Obelisk, were returned.<\/p>\n

But there are many more in various museums and private collections, he noted.<\/p>\n

Ethiopia\u2019s 11 UNESCO World Heritages are Aksum, Fasil Ghebbi, Simien National Park, the Rock-Hewn Churches of Lalibela, Harar Jugol, Konso Cultural Landscape, Lower Valley of the Awash, Lower Valley of the Omo, Gedeo Cultural Landscape, Tiya, and Bale Mountains National Park.<\/p>\n
