Three opposition parties in Tigray, Ethiopia (the Tigray Independence Party, the National Congress of Great Tigray and Salsay Weyane Tigray) released a statement Tuesday saying that people are dying of starvation, targeted attacks, crossfire, disease, and lack of resources in the embattled region of Ethiopia. They urge an independent investigation into the conflict, aid, and media access before there is a \u201chumanitarian disaster of biblical proportion.\u201d<\/p>\n

They say 50,000 civilians have been killed in the three-month conflict. Communication lines are still turned off to the region, and media and humanitarian access have been limited since November.<\/p>\n

The AP reports that Ethiopia\u2019s government has privately told the Biden administration in the U.S. that Tigray has \u201creturned to normalcy,\u201d but leaked documents from a crisis meeting of government and aid workers estimated that more than 4.5 million people, nearly the entire population of the region, need immediate emergency food aid.<\/p>\n

A trio of opposition parties in Ethiopia’s embattled Tigray region estimate\u00a0that more than 50,000 civilians have been killed in the three-month conflict. They urge the international community to intervene before a “humanitarian disaster of biblical proportion\u00a0will become a gruesome reality”. Meanwhile in Cameroon, getting an ID card is a real struggle:\u00a0some are forced to turn to the black market to get a form of identification. Finally, the first commercial flight has arrived\u00a0in Timbuktu since 2012, nine years after jihadists captured the fabled Malian city.<\/p>\n
