Africa-Press – Ethiopia. <\/strong><\/span>Ethiopia\u2019s membership in the BRICS is an important milestone for the nation politically, economically, and in terms of international relations, Professor of Public Policy at Addis Ababa University, Costentinos Berhe-Tesfa said.<\/p>\n

Ethiopia will be an official member of the BRICS from January 2024.<\/p>\n

In an exclusive interview with ENA, Costentinos said Ethiopia\u2019s membership in the BRICS is an important milestone for the nation.\u201d<\/p>\n

The membership will have a lot of impact in terms of international trade and the main agenda is to transform the multi-lateral system into some kind of an equitable system where countries will deal with each other on a sovereign basis.<\/p>\n

For the professor, the BRICS countries would like to see multi-literalism developed to a greater degree as they represent a significant part of the world economy now.<\/p>\n

BRICS controls about 40 percent of the world population and an equivalent amount of the economy as the countries now have higher economic values than G-7.<\/p>\n

The BRICS countries are high producing countries and emerging economies, he noted.<\/p>\n

According to him, \u201cthe fact that we are part of that (BRICS) means we have a huge amount of agricultural land, and Ethiopia is the water tower of north East Africa where our rivers export over 120 billion cubic meters of water every year. So, we can develop our agricultural potential.\u201d<\/p>\n

Moreover, most of the developed nations have now an aging population, which means most of the population is under retirement rather than being in the workforce.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe young population we have in Ethiopia, which is about 70 percent of the population, is very young. (This force) will be an immense addition to development initiatives,\u201d the professor stated.<\/p>\n

He further said that Brazil, Russia, China, India, and South Africa are all rich agricultural countries which are exporting food.<\/p>\n

Therefore, they can help us with this kind of investment, and the fact is also that you know that now we are a member of BRICS and they will have a kind of demand as part of the membership that they come and invest in this country.<\/p>\n

\u201cDefinitely, we are going to benefit a lot politically, economically, and also in terms of international relations,\u201d Costentinos underlined.<\/p>\n

Highlighting that BRICS membership is good from the geopolitical and multi-lateralism point of view, the professor stressed that Ethiopia has also had good relations with Europe and the U.S for more than a century with these countries.<\/p>\n

BRICS is an intergovernmental organization comprising Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa. It was formed in 2010 by the addition of South Africa to its predecessor called BRIC.<\/p>\n
