Africa-Press – Ethiopia. <\/strong><\/span>The Democratic Teachers’ Union (Sindprof) reported that teachers recently hired by the Ministry of Education have not received a salary for four months and some placed on islands other than their home already say they are \u201cgoing hungry\u201d.\u201cThe new teachers hired for the current academic year began their duties on September 4, 2023 and until now have not seen a single penny of their salaries, having even spent the Christmas holidays in total poverty\u201d, reads the publication.<\/p>\n

According to the same source, many of these teachers have asked him for help and others, he assured, claim to be starving, just as, in other cases, they are being threatened by the owners of the residences where they live because of outstanding rent.<\/p>\n

Sindprof criticized the fact that the Ministry of Education continues in \u201cprofound silence\u201d.<\/p>\n

Sindprof began a strike on Wednesday, the 27th, for an indefinite period, due to lack of agreement with the Ministry of Education on demands linked to the salary increase.<\/p>\n

Sindprof, according to president L\u00edgia Herbert in statements to Inforpress, presented a proposal requesting a salary increase from 78,678 escudos to 107,471 escudos in base salary, which was not accepted in the last meeting with the Ministry of Education and Directorate-General for Labor .<\/p>\n

According to the union leader, the strike, for an indefinite period, aims to make the Ministry of Education respect the class and resolve the problem of teachers, from changing levels to salary updates, among other demands.<\/p>\n

Students are currently on holiday for the Christmas and New Year period, with the start of classes scheduled for January 3, 2023.<\/p>\n
