Africa-Press – Ethiopia. <\/strong><\/span>February 7, 2025 2 minutes read Addis Abeba<\/b>\u2013 Gedion Timotheos, Ethiopia\u2019s Minister of Foreign Affairs, met with Tu\u0308rkiye\u2019s Deputy Foreign Minister Burhanettin Duran on Thursday, 06 February 2025, to discuss the upcoming technical negotiations on the implementation of the Ankara Declaration, Ethiopia\u2019s Ministry of Foreign Affairs said.<\/p>\n

The Ministry stated that Gedion Timotheos welcomed a high-level delegation led by the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Tu\u0308rkiye, Burhanettin Duran, where the two sides \u201cexchanged views on the technical aspects\u201d of the declaration\u2019s implementation.<\/p>\n

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs added that Gedion \u201cexpressed Ethiopia\u2019s commitment to the full implementation\u201d of the agreement and thanked Tu\u0308rkiye for its role in facilitating the tripartite deal with Somalia.<\/p>\n

The Ankara Declaration, signed in Ankara by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdog\u0306an, Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, and Somalia\u2019s President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, reaffirmed \u201crespect and commitment to one another\u2019s sovereignty, unity, independence, and territorial integrity,\u201d according to the joint statement.<\/p>\n

The agreement recognized the \u201cpotentially diverse benefits\u201d of Ethiopia gaining \u201cassured access to and from the sea\u201d while emphasizing respect for \u201cthe territorial integrity of the Federal Republic of Somalia.\u201d It also stated that the leaders agreed \u201cto forgo and leave behind differences and contentious issues.\u201d<\/p>\n

The declaration outlines plans for technical negotiations on Ethiopia\u2019s sea access, set to begin by February 2025 and conclude within four months. Both countries agreed \u201cto closely work together to finalize mutually advantageous commercial arrangements\u201d under Somalia\u2019s sovereign authority.<\/p>\n

The Ankara Declaration follows deteriorating relations between Ethiopia and Somalia earlier in 2024 after Ethiopia signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Somaliland to lease 20 kilometers (12 miles) of coastline in exchange for recognizing Somaliland\u2019s independence\u2014a move Mogadishu called an \u201cinfringement on Somalia\u2019s territorial sovereignty.\u201d<\/p>\n

Following the Ankara Declaration, Somalia\u2019s President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud traveled to Ethiopia on January 11, 2025, where he agreed with Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed to restore full diplomatic ties and enhance regional security cooperation. The visit marked the end of a year-long diplomatic hiatus between the two countries.<\/p>\n

In a joint communique\u0301, the two leaders committed to \u201crestore and enhance their bilateral relations through full diplomatic representation in their respective capitals\u201d and instructed their diplomatic missions in regional and multilateral forums to \u201cclosely cooperate on matters of mutual interest.\u201d They also underscored the need for \u201cstrong cooperation\u201d to address regional stability and agreed to coordinate efforts to foster shared progress and mutual understanding.<\/p>\n
