Africa-Press – Ethiopia. <\/strong><\/span>Ethiopia, in collaboration with other countries, has always been actively pushing for Africa\u2019s representation at Security Council of the United Nations, Spokesperson of Foreign Affairs Ministry, Ambassador Nebiat Getachew remarked.<\/p>\n

Foreign Affairs Spokesperson, Ambassador Nebiat Getachew on 46th Ordinary Session of the Executive Council of AU<\/p>\n

The spokesperson elaborated about the highlights of the 46th Ordinary Session of the Executive Council meeting of the African Union in Addis Ababa.<\/p>\n

He said that a significant activity was the election member states to the AU Peace and Security Council.<\/p>\n

Th peace and security council consists of 15 members and it is responsible for addressing the peace and security matters across the continent.<\/p>\n

Ethiopia will serve as member of this significant AU body for a three-year term, spanning from 2025 to 2027.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe significance of Ethiopia’s membership in the Peace and Security Council comes from the fact that it has always been the major advocator of peace and security issues not only in the continent, but also since the inception of the multilateral organs like the League of Nations and United Nations,\u201d Ambassador Nebiat elaborated.<\/p>\n

Stating that Ethiopia has always pushed for the concept of collective security, the spokesperson cited the country\u2019s participation in major peacekeeping operations carried out both under the UN and African Union.<\/p>\n

Ensuring lasting peace and security is one of the key components of AU\u2019s Agenda 2063, he recalled.<\/p>\n

\u201cEach member country has to collectively endeavor to advance the causes of peace, peaceful resolution to conflicts. And that would be the main engagement and preoccupation of the Peace and Security Council.\u201d<\/p>\n

Talking about Africa\u2019s representation within the UNSC, Ambassador Nebiat said Africa is not represented at this vital global body and this has been a rightful concern of African countries and the entire continental organization.<\/p>\n

He stated that Ethiopia has similar view towards having a rightful African representation at the Security Council of the United Nations.<\/p>\n

The AU and its predecessor the Organization of African Unity (OAU) has been pushing for this agenda, he noted.<\/p>\n

He added that it’s high time that we saw a fair representation at the United Nations Security Council.<\/p>\n
