Africa-Press – Ethiopia. <\/strong><\/span>The British government on Friday sentenced a man to 37 years\u2019 imprisonment for planning an attack on an air force base in northern England with a homemade bomb using explosives taken from fireworks.<\/p>\n

According to the sentencing judge, 29-year-old Mohammad Farooq had been inspired by Islamic State and was radicalised online.<\/p>\n

Farooq was found guilty last July of preparing acts of terrorism following a trial at Sheffield Crown Court.<\/p>\n

He had pleaded guilty before the trial to possessing an explosive substance with intent to endanger life and other offences after being arrested outside St James\u2019s Hospital in Leeds in January 2023.<\/p>\n

Police reportedly apprehended Farooq at the hospital, where he had previously worked as a student nurse, with a homemade bomb containing nearly 10 kg of explosives extracted from fireworks.<\/p>\n

Judge Bobbie Cheema-Grubb said Farooq had originally targeted RAF Menwith Hill, a Royal Air Force base in North Yorkshire that is also used by US forces.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut having realised it would be impossible to get into a position to detonate your device anywhere closer than the well-protected perimeter, you changed tack to a softer target,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

Farooq was sentenced to a minimum of 37 years in prison before he can be considered for parole.<\/p>\n

\u201cFarooq came dangerously close to harming innocent people,\u201d Counter Terrorism Police Superintendent Paul Greenwood said.<\/p>\n
