Africa-Press – Ethiopia. <\/strong><\/span>April 11, 2025 2 minutes read Addis Abeba<\/b>\u2013 Tigray People\u2019s Liberation Front (TPLF) Chairman Debretsion Gebremichael (PhD) pledged that the party will work in close coordination with the newly formed Interim Administration of the Tigray region while \u201cmaintaining its institutional independence.\u201d<\/p>\n

The party issued the statement during a meeting on Thursday to mark the appointment of Lt Gen. Tadesse Worede as President of the Interim Administration, replacing Getachew Reda.<\/p>\n

In what came as a gesture to diffuse internal divisions that pitted the party with the region\u2019s interim administration for months, Debretsion said that the TPLF \u201cstands ready\u201d to contribute to the execution of the Interim Administration\u2019s mandates in a timely and unified manner. \u201cWe express our readiness to collaborate and support each other to achieve the interim administration\u2019s missions in a short time.\u201d<\/p>\n

Earlier on Thursday, President Tadesse held his first cabinet meeting during which he vowed to tackle the region\u2019s most urgent challenges including by convening \u201ca public conference\u201d aimed at developing immediate and practical responses to the current crises. He also underscored the need for an inclusive approach \u2013 one that brings together all political groups in the region and broader segments of society to collectively advance Tigray\u2019s national interests.<\/p>\n

\u201cAlongside President Tadesse Worede, we wish to express our readiness to work together and in a coordinated way to achieve the tasks of the Interim Administration in a short period of time,\u201d the party quoted Debretsion\u2019s as saying.<\/p>\n

Reflecting on the past performance of the previous Interim Administration, Debretsion also remarked that it had \u201cfailed to fulfill its missions\u201d and, in some instances, \u201cinflicted harm on the people of Tigray.\u201d He vowed that new conditions now allow for a restructured administration that can deliver on its promises.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe main priority is for the Interim Administration to be reorganized in a way that swiftly fulfills the mandates expected by the people,\u201d Debretsion added.<\/p>\n

He highlighted several key areas of focus, including, but not limited to, liberating territories and populations still under occupation, facilitating the return of displaced and scattered residents, ensuring peace and stability across the region, and accelerating reconstruction efforts.<\/p>\n

\u201cThese efforts,\u201d he stressed, \u201caim to lay the foundation for a government in Tigray that reflects the will of its people.\u201d Debretsion emphasized that while the TPLF will remain a part of the Interim Administration, it will maintain its \u201cinstitutional independence,\u201d and that the party\u2019s commitment to \u201cmutual support in order to swiftly restore our sovereignty\u201d will remain steadfast.<\/p>\n

Interim President Tadesse, in his remarks at the same event, described the occasion as a time to \u201creflect on our past shortcomings,\u201d noting that the way forward must be rooted in \u201ccooperation and mutual support.\u201d<\/p>\n

He outlined that the Interim Administration will follow a work plan segmented into quarterly phases over the coming year, focusing on priority issues.<\/p>\n

He further stressed the need for close collaboration between the Interim Administration and the TPLF to address what he called \u201cthe great demands of our people\u201d in response to the region\u2019s ongoing challenges. He concluded by highlighting the importance of unity and shared responsibility to \u201cleave behind a meaningful legacy.\u201d<\/p>\n

Lt. Gen. Tadesse replaced Getachew Reda on 08 April, following months of internal rifts between the interim administration and the TPLF which intensified after the latter\u2019s 14th Congress in August last year that reportedly led to a split between factions aligned with Debretsion Gebremichael and former president Getachew Reda.<\/p>\n

The infighting culminated in the eventual departure of Getachew, who has just been appointed by Prime Minister Abiy as his advisor on East African Affairs with ministerial portfolio. AS<\/b><\/p>\n
