n style=”color: #ff6600;”>Africa-Press<\/a> – Ethiopia<\/a>. <\/strong>Addis Ababa, April 6\/2021\/ENA\/ UN Secretary-General Ant\u00f3nio Guterres revealed on Monday that COVID-19 pandemic has laid bare social in equality as COVAX Doses top 36 million.<\/p>\n

The COVID crisis \u201chas revealed how unequal our societies are\u201d said the UN chief in his message for World Health Day to be marked on Wednesday.<\/p>\n

Guterres highlighted the inequalities and injustices that have been apparent throughout the pandemic that the vast majority of vaccine doses administered so far have been confined to \u201ca few wealthy countries.\u201d<\/p>\n

The secretary-general said \u201cwithin countries, illness and death from COVID-19 has been higher among people and communities that contend with poverty, unfavorable living and working conditions, discrimination and social exclusion.\u201d<\/p>\n

Thanks to the COVAX initiative, the UN backed international effort to provide equitable vaccines across the world, more countries are receiving doses, \u201cbut most people in low and middle income countries still must watch and wait\u201d, the UN chief added.<\/p>\n

\u201cSuch inequities are immoral, and they are dangerous for our health, our economies and our societies,\u201d he pointed out.<\/p>\n

COVAX has shipped more than 36 million doses to 86 countries to date, the UN Spokesperson St\u00e9phane Dujarric told correspondents at UN Headquarters on Monday.<\/p>\n

As of 5 April, the World Health Organization (WHO) is reporting that there have been nearly 131,021,000 confirmed cases of COVID-19, including more than 2,850,520 deaths.<\/p>\n

Up to the end of 31 March, there had been 547,727,346 vaccine doses administered worldwide.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs we recover from the COVID-19 pandemic, we must implement policies and allocate resources so all can enjoy the same health outcomes\u201d, said Guterres.<\/p>\n

That will involve reaching the Sustainable Development Goals by 2030, he added, \u201cand it means delivering universal health coverage so everyone, everywhere, can thrive.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
