{"id":44275,"date":"2026-04-24T19:51:36","date_gmt":"2026-04-24T19:51:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/ethiopia\/all-news\/dermatology-and-venereology-prioritized-in-ethiopia"},"modified":"2026-04-24T19:58:04","modified_gmt":"2026-04-24T19:58:04","slug":"dermatology-and-venereology-prioritized-in-ethiopia","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.africa-press.net\/ethiopia\/all-news\/dermatology-and-venereology-prioritized-in-ethiopia","title":{"rendered":"Dermatology and Venereology Prioritized in Ethiopia"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span class=\"ap-article-header-tag\"> <strong>Africa-Press &#8211; Ethiopia. <\/strong> <\/span>Ethiopia\u2019s Health Minister, Mekdes Daba, said dermatology and venereology are among the top priorities in the country\u2019s health system.<\/p>\n<p>The 5th African Society of Dermatology and Venereology Congress (ASDV) is underway in Addis Abeba from April 24 to 25.<\/p>\n<p>The congress has drawn professionals from more than 30 countries, along with governmental and non-governmental organizations, and aims to explore ways of strengthening collaboration in the field and exchanging professional experience.<\/p>\n<p>In her opening remarks at the conference, Ethiopia\u2019s Health Minister Mekdes Daba said the country\u2019s health sector is undergoing a deep and deliberate transformation, focusing on strengthening primary health care and expanding access to specialized services.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018\u2019If we&#8217;re not connecting primary health care to the specialized and high-level care, we cannot close the loop in the care that we want to do on dermatology and venerology.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n<p>She noted that the number of dermatologists and venereology specialists has increased significantly over the years, although gaps still remain.<\/p>\n<p>Thus, the country is working to invest and collaborate with partners globally, with particular emphasis on South-to-South cooperation with universities and institutions across the continent, the minister pointed out.<\/p>\n<p>According to her, Ethiopia is advancing digital health, with digitalization and artificial intelligence increasingly embedded in diagnostics.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;In Ethiopia, dermatology intersects directly with our national priorities. It&#8217;s closely linked with infectious diseases that we&#8217;re fighting, where our previous policies were more focused around, and now, as we evolve from only prevention, we&#8217;re also working on prevention and treatment in our policy.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>She added that digital tools are creating new opportunities, noting that telemedicine and decision-support systems are enabling health extension workers, family doctors, and other primary health care professionals to better support specialists through improved referral and linkage systems.<\/p>\n<p>Moez Ben Salem, President of ASDV, said on his part that the association was established 10 years ago with the aim of uniting and fostering collaboration among dermatologists across Africa.<\/p>\n<p>He stated that the conference, attended by dermatologists from Ethiopia, other African countries, and beyond\u2014including Europe, America, Asia, and Australia\u2014will provide an opportunity for specialists to exchange scientific experience.<\/p>\n<p>He added that the conference program is rich and diverse, featuring both classic dermatology topics and the latest developments in the field, which are becoming increasingly important in medical congresses.<\/p>\n<p>Therefore, the congress will play a vital role in creating an enabling platform for countries to collaborate in expertise exchange and knowledge sharing, among others, he underscored.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ap-article-footer-note\">Find more news and analyses on <span class=\"ap-highlight-country\">Ethiopia<\/span> on the <span class=\"ap-highlight-brand\">Africa Press<\/span> website<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Africa-Press &#8211; Ethiopia.
