Africa-Press – Ethiopia. <\/strong> <\/span>Ethiopia has accused Egypt of undermining its efforts to secure access to the Red Sea, following Cairo’s recent signing of a maritime cooperation agreement with Eritrea.<\/p>\n

This accusation was made in a statement by the spokesperson for the Ethiopian Foreign Ministry, Nebiat Getachew, who claimed that Addis Ababa accused Egypt of attempting to “obstruct” Ethiopia’s access to the Red Sea, while no comment has been issued from the Egyptian side regarding these allegations.<\/p>\n

He added that Ethiopia “will continue to work to secure access to the sea through a peaceful and sustainable path.”<\/p>\n

In the statement, the Ethiopian Foreign Ministry described what it termed “Egyptian harassment towards regional countries” as an ongoing issue that has persisted for centuries, aimed at preventing them from achieving their developmental goals.<\/p>\n

The spokesperson alleged that Cairo has exerted various pressures and harassments over the years that have contributed to creating tensions within the region, emphasizing that these policies are not new but rather part of an old strategy followed by Egypt.<\/p>\n

He further stated that Egyptian pressures have intensified following Ethiopia’s demand for a maritime outlet, considering that Cairo seeks to suppress this demand and divert attention from it.<\/p>\n

Nebiat affirmed that Ethiopia will continue to work to enhance its maritime interests, noting that its demand has received understanding and support from several governments and international institutions.<\/p>\n

He stressed that the Ethiopian government believes in the necessity of addressing the issue of maritime access through peaceful means and dialogue, pointing out that Addis Ababa has conveyed this position to several world leaders during its diplomatic consultations.<\/p>\n

This is not the first time Ethiopia has made such an accusation, but it comes less than a week after Egypt and Eritrea \u2013 Ethiopia’s arch-rival \u2013 signed cooperation agreements in the Red Sea.<\/p>\n

The agreements were signed in the Eritrean capital Asmara, in the presence of President Isaias Afwerki, during a visit by the Egyptian Foreign Minister and the Minister of Transport.<\/p>\n

The Egyptian Foreign Ministry stated that the agreements included “a cooperation agreement regarding maritime transport and the establishment of a shipping line linking Egyptian and Eritrean ports across the Red Sea.”<\/p>\n

The ministry added that the Foreign Minister assured Afwerki that the “management and security” of the Red Sea should remain the “exclusive responsibility” of the countries bordering the strategic waterway.<\/p>\n

The statement quoted the Foreign Minister as saying: “Non-coastal parties have no right to engage in arrangements concerning the Red Sea.”<\/p>\n

Since Eritrea’s independence in 1991 following a decades-long civil war, Ethiopia, a landlocked country, has increasingly sought to establish a permanent presence on the Red Sea, including through a controversial memorandum of understanding signed in 2024 with Somaliland, a separatist region within Somalia.<\/p>\n

Under this agreement, Addis Ababa would gain access to the port of Berbera in exchange for the possibility of recognizing Somaliland’s independence.<\/p>\n

This agreement has drawn strong condemnation from Somalia, which considers Somaliland part of its sovereign territory, accusing Ethiopia of violating its territorial integrity.<\/p>\n

The implementation of the 2024 agreement has since stalled amid international pressures and Turkish-mediated talks between Mogadishu and Addis Ababa. Addis Ababa has not officially recognized Somaliland to date, and no final agreement has been reached granting access to the ports.<\/p>\n

Repeatedly, Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has stated that lasting peace in the Horn of Africa cannot be achieved as long as Ethiopia lacks direct access to the sea, reiterating his country’s long-standing strategic ambition for a maritime outlet.<\/p>\n

In a recent interview with Ethiopian national television, Abiy Ahmed considered that the absence of direct access to ports restricts Ethiopia’s economic expansion and its ability to compete internationally, describing maritime access as a vital element for achieving sustainable development and self-sufficiency.<\/p>\n

Tensions between Cairo and Addis Ababa date back to before the Somaliland agreement, as the two countries have been at odds for over a decade due to the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam, which Addis Ababa is constructing on the Blue Nile, the main tributary of the Nile.<\/p>\n

Cairo claims that the dam threatens the flow of Nile waters downstream, at a time when Egypt relies on the Nile for over 90% of its water needs.<\/p>\n

Egypt has sought to strengthen relations with other countries in the Horn of Africa, including Sudan, Somalia, and Djibouti, in an attempt to build regional support amid its dispute with Ethiopia.<\/p>\n

At the same time, Ethiopia is intensifying its diplomatic communications, as the Ethiopian State Minister for Foreign Affairs visited Qatar this week, where she met with the Qatari Prime Minister and Foreign Minister.<\/p>\n

Last week, the Ethiopian Foreign Minister met with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio in Washington, in an effort to strengthen relations with the Trump administration following reports that Washington is considering a potential reset of relations with Eritrea.<\/p>\n

In late April, the Wall Street Journal reported that the Trump administration is considering lifting sanctions on Eritrea, particularly amid growing U.S. concerns about Iran and the Houthi movement in Yemen, increasing the strategic importance of shipping routes in the Red Sea.<\/p>\n

Eritrea controls approximately 750 miles of Red Sea coastline, including the strategic port of Assab.<\/p>\n
