Africa-Press – Ethiopia. <\/strong> <\/span>The Ethiopian Prime Minister, Abiy Ahmed, cast his vote on Monday at a polling station in the city of Bashasha, coinciding with approximately 54 million Ethiopians heading to the polls to participate in the seventh general elections.<\/p>\n

After casting his vote, Abiy Ahmed delivered multiple political messages that hinted at the country’s future, the peace process, and the security challenges preceding the elections. He emphasized that the widespread public participation reflects the Ethiopian people’s commitment to democracy and their determination to build a stronger and more stable nation.<\/p>\n

The Prime Minister praised the high turnout at polling stations since the early hours of voting, noting that the large public presence serves as evidence of the Ethiopian people’s awareness and belief in the democratic process.<\/p>\n

He stated that citizens expect much from the leadership that will emerge from the elections, and that the responsibility of the winners extends beyond securing seats; it includes responding to the aspirations of the people and working to achieve their hopes for development, stability, and prosperity.<\/p>\n

He added that the coming years will require increased effort and strong political will to continue the path of construction and reform, asserting that Ethiopia is undergoing a profound transformation that distinguishes it from the past.<\/p>\n

He remarked, “Ethiopia today is not the Ethiopia of yesterday, and the next phase will be one of greater construction and broader transformations.” Abiy Ahmed called on all political forces to respect the will of the voters and to handle the election results with a sense of responsibility, emphasizing that the winners are obligated to serve the citizens with sincerity and integrity, while those who are not fortunate enough to win should accept the results in a democratic spirit.<\/p>\n

He pointed out that the future of the country requires cooperation from all national forces to enhance stability and consolidate the gains achieved over the past years.<\/p>\n

He affirmed that the next government will continue to work on building a strong state and institutions capable of protecting the interests of future generations, stating, “We will work to build a future that makes our children more confident in their country and more competitive.”<\/p>\n

The Prime Minister considered the seventh general elections to be an important political experience not only for Ethiopia but for the entire East African region, noting that the region is still in the process of consolidating democratic practices compared to other areas of the continent.<\/p>\n

He stated that the Ethiopian experience over the past five years has proven that development and political reform can go hand in hand, affirming that the government will continue, if renewed trust is granted, to work towards fulfilling citizens’ aspirations for economic revival and comprehensive development.<\/p>\n

Regarding peace, Abiy Ahmed stressed that his government has prioritized achieving national stability, confirming that the efforts made over the past years will continue through various political and institutional mechanisms.<\/p>\n

He stated that the government’s doors remain open to all parties wishing to engage in peaceful political work, adding that the state’s commitment to dialogue should not be interpreted as weakness.<\/p>\n

He emphasized that access to power cannot be achieved through force, but rather through peaceful and constitutional means, reiterating that the government will continue to adhere to the option of peace and the unity of Ethiopia.<\/p>\n

The Ethiopian Prime Minister revealed that security authorities had thwarted systematic attempts to disrupt the electoral process in the period leading up to the elections, indicating that the relevant agencies managed to discover and remove hundreds of explosives that were intended to target civilian areas.<\/p>\n

Abiy Ahmed accused what he described as “hostile entities towards Ethiopia” of supporting elements and movements aimed at disrupting the elections and questioning the country’s ability to organize a successful democratic process.<\/p>\n

He stated that these entities had bet on the failure of the electoral process and on portraying Ethiopia as a country incapable of managing its internal affairs; however, what transpired on the ground proved otherwise.<\/p>\n

He added that the success of the elections thus far reflects the resilience of state institutions and the strength of popular will, affirming that the crowds that flocked to polling stations sent a clear message to both domestic and international audiences that the Ethiopian people are committed to their right to choose their leadership through the ballot box and are moving forward in completing the state-building project and achieving development and stability.<\/p>\n

He concluded his remarks by affirming that the will of the Ethiopians was the decisive factor in the success of this electoral process, considering that the wide participation represents a victory for democracy and a message of confidence in the country’s future and its political path.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, observers from the African Union and IGAD announced the commencement of voting operations, local monitoring, and other activities related to the ongoing elections at Ethiopian polling stations on Monday.<\/p>\n

The head of the African Union mission, former Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta, emphasized the importance of the Ethiopian elections in freely choosing the country’s leadership and the success of the electoral process due to its impact on the entire region.<\/p>\n

On the other hand, the head of the IGAD mission, former Ugandan Vice President Dr. Specioza Kazibwe, clarified the mission’s readiness to support Ethiopia’s efforts in conducting a successful electoral process.<\/p>\n

Members of the continental monitoring missions are moving between several polling stations in the country, and they are expected to submit their report on Wednesday. The electoral process has seen intensive movements from the IGAD and African Union missions to monitor the elections within the Ethiopian capital, Addis Ababa, since the early hours of the morning.<\/p>\n
