Africa-Press – Ethiopia. <\/strong> <\/span>Opposition authorities in the Tigray region of northern Ethiopia have reported that at least one person was killed in a drone strike targeting the area, accusing the federal government of being behind the attack. This development raises growing concerns about the potential return of armed conflict to a region that experienced a bloody war years ago.<\/p>\n

According to a statement from Tigray People’s Liberation Front authorities, the strike targeted an area near the town of Sheraro in the northwest of the region, close to the Eritrean border.<\/p>\n

The statement clarified that the attack resulted in at least one death and injuries to several members of the Tigray army, alongside material damage, without disclosing further details about the extent of the losses.<\/p>\n

These developments come amid rising tensions between the federal government in Addis Ababa and the Tigray People’s Liberation Front, which has been the dominant political and military force in the region for years.<\/p>\n

Disputes between the two sides have persisted in recent months, amid warnings of a possible collapse of the calm that followed the peace agreement signed in Pretoria, South Africa, in 2022.<\/p>\n

The war that erupted between the Ethiopian army and Tigray People’s Liberation Front forces from November 2020 to November 2022 resulted in at least 600,000 deaths, according to estimates from the African Union, while several experts believe the actual toll could be much higher.<\/p>\n

Although the Pretoria agreement helped halt large-scale military operations, tensions resurfaced in late 2025 with direct clashes between federal forces and Tigray forces, reigniting fears of the region slipping back into a new round of conflict.<\/p>\n

Opposition authorities in Tigray indicate that the federal government is the only entity in the country that possesses drones, which were heavily used during the previous war in the region and have also been employed in recent years for military operations against rebel groups in the Amhara and Oromia regions. So far, there has been no official comment from the Ethiopian army regarding the accusations against it. The region also witnessed two drone strikes last January, resulting in one death, according to local media reports.<\/p>\n

In the context of escalating political disputes, the Tigray People’s Liberation Front reconstituted a local parliament last April, a move that federal authorities deemed illegal, while the front viewed it as a reaffirmation of its authority within the region. This step comes despite the front being removed from the list of officially registered political parties in Ethiopia, yet it still retains significant influence within Tigray.<\/p>\n

The region continues to face difficult humanitarian and economic conditions following years of war, with hundreds of thousands of residents still displaced, while the area suffers from increasing financial pressures due to reduced federal support. Additionally, parliamentary elections held in most parts of the country in early June did not take place in Tigray, reflecting the ongoing political and security tensions in the region.<\/p>\n
