Africa-Press – Gambia. The Gambia’s National Assembly unanimously passed the Anti-Corruption Bill after its third reading by the Minister of Justice. This landmark legislation paves the way for a more robust legal framework to combat corruption and economic crimes in the country.
The bill repeals the outdated Gambia Anti-Corruption Commission Act 2012 and establishes a new commission empowered to investigate and prosecute corruption offenders. It clearly defines and prohibits various corruption-related offenses, with proportionate punishments outlined.
Beyond enforcement, the bill also emphasizes prevention through education and awareness-raising initiatives. Additionally, it provides mechanisms for asset recovery and whistleblower protection, safeguarding those who come forward with vital information.
Following the Anti-Corruption Bill’s passage, the National Assembly also approved the Animal Health Bill, another key piece of legislation addressing concerns within the agricultural sector.
