Africa-Press – Gambia. Girls’ Pride Gambia has wrapped up a twenty-day training program on how to make handmade reusable sanitary pads and gamified menstrual health and hygiene management with twenty-five Home Science Teachers in the Lower River Region (LRR).
The training program project held in Pakalinding village in LRR was funded by the Canadian Embassy in Senegal through the Canada Funds For Local Initiatives. The closing ceremony of this training which started 8th of January and ended 31st of January 2024 was witnessed by H.E. Marie-Genevieve Mounier, the Ambassador of the Canada Embassy for Senegal, Gambia, and Guinea Bissau and she was accompanied to The Gambia by her team.
Among others who were present at the closing of the training was the Principal Education Officer in LRR from the Regional Directorate of Education (MoBSE).
The training aimed at breaking the cycle of period poverty in schools, keeping girls in schools during their periods, preventing them from gender-based violence, teenage pregnancy, and child marriage, and reducing the amount of plastic waste that is generated from disposable pads causing harm to the environment and water bodies.
At the training, Girls’ Pride Gambia provided raw materials and the Funneh board game for all the teachers to set up reusable pad banks in their schools and conduct step-down training for other teachers, members of the Mother’s club, and their students (boys and girls) taking home science subject.
However, Teachers were encouraged to work with the Parent Teacher Association (PTA) and the Mother’s Clubs in their schools to support them in their journey to end period poverty in their schools and their communities.
