WADEMOS Welcomes Verdict of Senegal’s Constitutional Council

Africa-Press – Gambia. The West Africa Democracy Solidarity Network (WADEMOS) has welcomed the verdict of Senegal’s Constitutional Council on the West African nation’s presidential election.

WADEMOS is a pro-democracy network of national and transnational civil society organizations fromacross West Africa.

The network commended the constitutional council for its “swift decision” against the National Assembly’s 5thFebruary vote to postpone the elections until December 15.

“This judgment provides a glimmer of relief amidst the subregion’s most crucial governance crisis and democratic decline,” WADEMOS said in a statement it recently released. It recognized that the judgment cameagainst the backdrop of the recent announcement of the withdrawal of Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger from the ECOWAS.

WADEMOS, however, said it acknowledged “the President’s commitment to fully abide by the council’s decision without delay”. The network urged the President and the election management body to immediately set a new date that aligns with the provisions of the constitution.
