Africa-Press – Gambia. MC Cham Junior, a business councillor at the Kanifing Municipal Council and a senior member of the opposition United Democratic Party (UDP), has launched a scathing critique of Mai Ahmad Fatty, leader of the Gambia Moral Congress (GMC), accusing him of dishonesty, political manipulation, and a lack of integrity.
The remarks came in response to recent comments by Mr. Fatty, who described the upcoming 2026 presidential election as a “do-or-die” moment, suggesting that a loss by the incumbent National People’s Party (NPP) could lead to his return to exile.“Hon. Mai Ahmed Fatty, leader of the Gambia Moral Congress (GMC) is manipulative and dishonest to the Gambian people,” Mr. Cham said in a statement. “His recent utterances regarding the United Democratic Party stem from fear — fear of the accountability that may follow a change in government.”
Mr. Cham accused Mr. Fatty of undermining the 2016 political coalition that brought President Adama Barrow to power and questioned the relevance of the GMC in the current political landscape.
“The GMC leader’s loss of personal integrity is now well known in the Gambia’s political discourse. He is among the “ghost party” leaders who could not produce delegates in the 2016 Presidential candidate selection and demonstrated total disregard for the coalition program to achieve its aspirations,” he said.
Referring to Mr. Fatty’s comments about the possibility of going into exile, Mr. Cham challenged the former interior minister’s motivations. “In his own words, “since I don’t want to go on exile again, I will fight to the death to make sure it doesn’t happen. So, 2026 is do-or-die. Alliance partners need to think about the impending consequences of UDP winning in 2026.” Why did he exile during the APRC government? What did he say or do in the struggle that the late Hon. Omar Jallow and Lawyer Darboe to name a few, did not say or do?” he asked.
Mr. Cham went on to argue that if Mr. Fatty had nothing to hide from his time in public office, he should not fear political transition or legal scrutiny.
Calling on voters and political actors to focus on integrity and transparency, Mr. Cham dismissed Mr. Fatty’s relevance in the national conversation ahead of the 2026 polls. “Fatty should not be given any relevance in the 2026 election campaign, as we learned from the past. The Change in 2026 is inevitable, and accountability will be at the center of discussions,” he said.
