The Gambia and China’S Heilongjiang Province Sign Four Accords to Spur Development

Africa-Press – Gambia. The Gambia and China’s Heilongjiang Province strengthened their bilateral ties with the signing of four Memoranda of Understanding aimed at boosting socioeconomic development in the West African nation.

The signing ceremony, held at the State House in Banjul, brought together senior government officials and representatives from Heilongjiang, underscoring a deepening relationship between the two sides.

The first agreement focuses on the construction of water and sports facilities, part of the Gambian government’s broader efforts to expand access to clean water and revitalize the country’s sports sector. The memorandum was signed by the Chief of Staff at the President’s Office on behalf of The Gambia.

A second agreement will provide free cataract surgeries for Gambian patients. Dr. Ahmadou Lamin Samateh, the Minister of Health, signed the memorandum, which aims to address the country’s growing need for accessible eye care.

A third memorandum establishes a framework for talent exchange and training programs. Signed by the Secretary to Cabinet and Head of Civil Service, the initiative seeks to foster skills development and knowledge sharing between the two parties.

The fourth agreement involves the supply of non-genetically modified rice seeds, an initiative aligned with The Gambia’s drive to transform its agricultural sector into a more vibrant and high-yielding contributor to the economy.

In a separate contractual signing, Longjian Company, a Chinese firm, entered into four agreements with Gambian institutions to support infrastructure and agricultural development. These contracts include the construction of a new bridge at Kotu, road maintenance projects, rice seed production, and land rehabilitation initiatives.

The National Roads Authority signed agreements for the bridge construction and road maintenance, while the ROOTS Programme Director and Gambia Investment and Export Promotion Agency (GIEPA) formalized agreements on agricultural seed production and land rehabilitation, respectively.

Following the ceremonies, President Adama Barrow hosted a private dinner for the visiting delegation at the State House.
