Africa-Press – Gambia. Dr. Ismaila Ceesay, leader and secretary general of the Citizens’ Alliance, vowed on Sunday that his party and its coalition partners would do everything within their power to prevent opposition parties from gaining power in the 2026 elections.
Speaking to journalists at the State House following a meeting between President Adama Barrow and allied party leaders, Dr. Ceesay delivered a blunt assessment of the opposition’s capabilities and intentions.
“The current stock of opposition don’t have what it takes to govern this country; they don’t have good intentions for this country,” he said. “We are going to do everything with our powers to stop them from getting into government, and that is very clear.”
Dr. Ceesay outlined three main objectives for the National People’s Party (NPP) coalition: to secure President Barrow’s re-election in 2026, to maintain political unity afterward, and to support the continuation of what he described as the president’s “transformative agenda” for the country.
Dr. Ceesay commended President Barrow’s leadership, emphasizing three key qualities he described as vital for effective governance: forgiveness, patience, and tolerance.
“We thank the president for his foresight and his vision for calling on this meeting to bring all the coalition partners together to discuss strategies and how we are going to approach 2026. Obviously, anybody who knows the president has worked with him. There are three qualities that he possesses that are very rare in a human being.”
He continued, “One is he forgives; two, he is patient; and three, he is tolerant. All these three, not many people have what it takes to combine all these three qualities. Now because of that, we as a coalition have made a promise, a declaration, that we are going to ensure that we do everything in our capacity to get him re-elected again in 2026 so he can continue his agenda of transforming this country.”
Sunday’s meeting at the State House, Dr. Ceesay said, marked an important milestone in the coalition’s preparations for the 2026 campaign.
“I’m happy that there is unity within the ranks of the alliance. Everybody is on board, and I think this alliance has. I have not seen any alliance that has what this alliance has. It has experience,” He Said.
