Pressure Group Seeks Permit to Stage Peaceful Protest in Banjul

Africa-Press – Gambia. Gambians Against Looted Assets (GALA), a pressure group has written to the Inspector General of Police, seeking for a permit to stage a peaceful protest against government’s handling of former dictator Jammeh’s properties.

In a letter addressed to the office of IGP, the advocacy youth group requested a permit to hold a peaceful assembly slated for 8th May, 2025, from 11:00am to 1:00pm.

According to the group, the peaceful protest will be held from the Christian Cemetery to the Attorney General’s Chambers in Banjul, where they will deliver a petition to the Attorney General and Minister of Justice.

“The protest is inspired by the recent report published by The Republic on the assets of Gambia’s former dictator. The issue of corruption and lack of transparency has reached its peak in the Gambia. Therefore, citizens can no longer remain silent on the amount of corruption and embezzlement of state resources,” GALA said in the letter.

Accordingly, they urged the office of the IGP to grant them the permit to exercise their “fundamental right to peaceful assembly and freedom expression.”

“In the service of our nation, we look forward to your positive cooperation,” the pressure group further added.

The applicants and signatories of the letter are: Omar Saibo Camara, Ebrima Jallow, Muhammed Lamin Ceesay, Mamadi Kurang, Bubacarr Bob Keita, and Gallas Ceesay.
