Ministry of Trade Confirms Bread Price to Remain at D10 Nationwide

Africa-Press – Gambia. The Ministry of Trade, Industry, Regional Integration, and Employment has confirmed through a press release that the price of bread will remain fixed at D10 per loaf across the country. This decision follows months of consultations with key stakeholders in the industry.

“The General public is hereby informed that, out of the negotiations, the prices of bread for both Senfur and Tapalapa remain at D10 per loaf across the country,” The Statement said.

The statement further noted that the government, through the Ministry of Trade, continues to closely monitor the production, distribution, and sale of bread to ensure that this essential staple remains both available and affordable for the population.

It recalled that following a March 2025 announcement by the Gambia Bakers’ Union (GBU) proposing an increase in bread prices from D10 to D15 per loaf, the Ministry engaged the Union to understand the rationale behind the proposed hike, which was attributed to rising production costs.

Through constructive dialogue involving the GBU, the Gambia Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (GCCPC), and the Consumer Consortium, it was agreed that the proposed price increase would be suspended pending a comprehensive review of the cost structure.

As a result, a Taskforce was formed—comprising representatives from the Ministry, GCCPC, and GBU—to gather and analyze data on bread production costs.

The Taskforce collected input cost data from 48 Senfur and Tapalaba bakeries across the country. The findings were later presented to the Ministry’s senior management and the Executive of the Bakers’ Union on Wednesday, May 7, 2025, to help inform the government’s stance on bread pricing.

“The presented data clearly revealed that the proposed increase in the price of bread by the Bakers’ Union could not be imperially supported.” The Statement Said.

The statement also affirmed that the Ministry will continue to engage all stakeholders across the value chain in pursuit of amicable and sustainable solutions that serve the broader public interest. It further emphasized that any future decisions resulting from these engagements will adhere to national quality standards set by the Gambia Standards Bureau.
