Interior Ministry Intensifies Drug War Efforts

Africa-Press – Gambia. The Ministry of Interior has pledged renewed efforts in tackling drug abuse and trafficking in The Gambia, combining public health-focused prevention with tough law enforcement, ahead of World Drug Day 2025.

In a national televised statement, Interior Minister Abdoulie Sanyang said this year’s theme “The Evidence is Clear: Invest in Prevention to Break the Cycle and Stop Organized Crime” highlights the urgency to strengthen both prevention and prosecution mechanisms in the country’s anti-drug strategy.

Minister Sanyang outlined the government’s balanced approach, emphasizing The Gambia’s commitment to a “multisectoral” strategy that focuses on reducing drug demand while clamping down on trafficking networks.

“The Drug Law Enforcement Agency, The Gambia (DLEAG), has been proactive through school-based sensitization, radio talk shows, community outreach and the creation of Drug-Free Clubs,” he said. He added that these grassroots programs are critical in raising awareness and promoting resilience, especially among youth.

One of the landmark developments, he revealed, is the construction of the country’s first-ever specialized drug treatment facility, funded by ECOWAS and expected to be operational by the end of 2025. The center will offer treatment for drug and substance use disorders and is being developed in collaboration with the Ministry of Health, Department of Social Welfare, and civil society organizations.

On the enforcement side, the Minister commended DLEAG’s role in major drug busts, including seizures of cocaine, hashish, ecstasy, and the destruction of large cannabis farms in the West Coast Region. He noted that several high-profile traffickers have been arrested and prosecuted, thanks to the agency’s continued efforts.

Despite these achievements, Minister Sanyang warned that government alone cannot win the fight. He called for stronger support from civil society, youth groups, and local communities, urging them to actively participate in prevention and awareness programs.

“My Ministry remains committed to ensuring DLEAG has the capacity to fulfil its mandate,” he said, reaffirming President Barrow’s leadership on security sector reform and drug control.

World Drug Day is observed annually on June 26th to promote global action against drug abuse and trafficking.
