Africa-Press – Gambia. As the official inauguration of the Sanyang Seaport approaches on Saturday, July 5, 2025, Ebrima Sillah, Minister of Transport, Works and Infrastructure, has urged members of the Sanyang Village Development Committee (VDC) to foster unity to ensure the successful completion and operation of the project.
Minister Sillah, who reportedly met with representatives from the Sanyang community, emphasized the importance of resolving internal disagreements within the VDC. He acknowledged reports that some committee members felt excluded from information about the inauguration.
“I think what is happening is probably an internal issue among the VDC members themselves. But what the government does and the Gambia Ports Authority and our partners to engage the VDC, whose representatives are on the organizing committee, the council of elders that we call the bulunda, and the Sanyang community leaders. Now, whether the information is being filtered to the task force that was set up to deal directly with the ministry is something that we are not very sure of,” Minister Sillah explained.
Speaking after his recent visit to Sanyang on Monday evening, Minister Sillah described his discussions with community leaders and the VDC as productive.
“I appealed to them that whatever might be between them should be really set aside and then concentrate on the bigger picture, because even when the foundation stone is laid and the project kicked off, we have to continue to deal with the community and issues like employability for the youths of Sanyang, and also, there are concerns about the environment, and all those things will continue to be an engaging issue for us, and therefore, it is important that we continue to have their buy in and their support for this project to seamlessly be implemented in a manner that we all want it to be,” Minister Sillah stated.
