Africa-Press – Gambia. President Adama Barrow has appointed Defence Minister Sering Modou Njie as the new Minister of Foreign Affairs, International Cooperation, and Gambians Abroad. The announcement, made on Wednesday, 9th July 2025, follows the resignation of Dr. Mamadou Tangara, who is leaving the post to take up a new role at the African Union.
In the interim, Vice President Muhammed B.S. Jallow will oversee the Ministry of Defence.
Minister Njie holds a Bachelor’s degree in Political Science and a Master’s degree in International Relations. A former officer of the Gambia Armed Forces, Njie began his military career in 1998, serving as the army’s Public Relations Officer. He later rose to head the Republican National Guard in 2011.
His diplomatic credentials include postings as Deputy Head of Mission at the Gambia High Commission in New Delhi, India, and service at the Gambian Embassy in Turkey. In 2022, he was appointed Minister of Defence.
Dr. Tangara served as Minister of Foreign Affairs, International Cooperation, and Gambians Abroad for nearly eight years. His resignation marks the end of a long tenure in the Barrow administration’s diplomatic service.
