Africa-Press – Gambia. The management and staff of Kaur Senior Secondary School in the Lower Saloum District, Central River Region, held their annual Speech and Prize Award Ceremony on Saturday, 5th July 2025, at the school hall, marking another milestone in the school’s journey toward academic excellence.
The event, organized under the auspices of the school’s Board of Governors, brought together dignitaries, educators, community leaders, parents, and students to celebrate the achievements of both outgoing and continuing students.
In his opening remarks, Mr. Hassoum Ceesay, Chairman of the Board of Governors, congratulated the graduating class and applauded the dedication of the school’s staff. He urged the graduates to remain focused, disciplined, and prayerful as they step into the next phase of their academic and personal journeys.
“Take your education seriously and never relent,” he advised. “This is just the beginning of your achievements.”
Mr. Ceesay also commended the school leadership, led by the principal, for their hard work and encouraged them to continue raising the standard of education at Kaur SSS.
Presenting the school’s annual report, Principal Amet Jeng highlighted a remarkable 41% increase in student enrollment from the 2023–2024 to the 2024–2025 academic year, attributing the growth to the school’s strong performance in the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE). He noted that the school is successfully fulfilling tertiary education entry requirements, with students qualifying for institutions such as the University of The Gambia (UTG), the University of Applied Science, Engineering and Technology (USET), and the Gambia College.
Kaur SSS continues to offer 31 subjects across key disciplines including humanities, business studies, science, home science, and agriculture. Principal Jeng acknowledged the contributions of feeder school head teachers and praised the school’s young and dynamic teaching staff.
“Our teachers are committed to student success and go the extra mile by organizing free extra classes for Grade 12 students from Monday to Saturday,” he said.
In extracurricular achievements, the school took first place in the 12th edition of the Fanta Science and Mathematics Quiz, outcompeting 72 other senior secondary schools at the regional and national levels.
On WASSCE performance, the principal proudly announced that 91% of the 128 candidates who sat for the May/June 2024 exams passed their registered subjects, a record-breaking result for the school.
The Principal extended gratitude to key sponsors, notably Trust Bank Gambia Ltd., which awarded cash prizes (in the form of savings accounts) to best-performing Grade 12 students in Science, Business Studies, and Humanities, and Comium for its continued support.
Delivering his inspiring keynote address, Mr. Essa Jallow, Deputy Secretary General of the Gambia Teachers Union, congratulated the graduates and centered his speech on the theme: “Beyond WASSCE: Embracing the Power of Your Story.”
He encouraged students to recognize the strength and value of their personal experiences as they pursue future opportunities, emphasizing the growing availability of higher education in The Gambia through the establishment of four public universities: the University of Education (UEG), the Civil Service University (CSU), UTG, and USET.
“To the graduating students, today marks the start of a new chapter,” he said. “You now have the opportunity to shape your future using your unique stories as tools for success.”
Mr. Jallow also commended the continuing students, teachers, and parents, particularly the Parent-Teacher Association (PTA), for their collective effort in supporting the school’s vision.
Meanwhile, the event was graced by dignitaries including members of the school’s governing board, directors from the Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education, sitting and former National Assembly members, traditional leaders, school heads from Cluster 6, and representatives of the Kaur SSS Ex-Students Association.
However, different people were awarded for their great contributions to the development and achievements of the school while numbers of students, too, received awards for their outstanding performances.
