IDEA Trains Parliament on Inclusion and Diversity

Africa-Press – Gambia. The International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance (International IDEA) recently conducted a two-day training for National Assembly Members on inclusion and diversity management.

This initiative, implemented under the European Union-funded CODE Project, underscores a strong and collective commitment to cultivating a parliamentary environment that is equitable, genuinely representative, and deeply inclusive.

Speaker of the National Assembly, Hon. Fabakary Tombong Jatta, emphasized that this commitment is not merely aspirational but a vital imperative essential for the sustained progress, lasting harmony, and robust democratic health of The Gambia.

“We, as the National Assembly, are the voice of the people, and that voice must reflect the rich diversity, complexity, and beauty of our society. It is our constitutional duty to ensure that no segment of our population feels unheard, unseen, or unrepresented,” Speaker Jatta stated.

He described the training as a testament to the legislature’s ongoing dedication to strengthening parliamentary capacity and promoting the highest standards and best practices in governance.

“In an increasingly diverse and interconnected world, understanding, championing, and effectively managing diversity and inclusion are no longer mere moral obligations or abstract ideals. They are strategic necessities for sound policymaking, for building resilient democratic institutions, and most importantly, for nurturing and sustaining public trust in our governance,” he added.

Speaker Jatta also expressed gratitude to International IDEA for their generous support in facilitating this pivotal training.

Mrs. Jainaba Faye, Head of International IDEA’s Country Office, highlighted that the training was part of a series of activities funded by the European Union’s CODE Project and implemented by International IDEA.

“As parliamentarians, the transformative role you play in advancing these principles cannot be overstated. You have the power to craft systems and policies that reflect the needs of all citizens not just a select few. Inclusion and diversity management are practical and actionable measures that lead to stronger governance, greater social cohesion, and a more resilient nation,” Mrs. Faye noted.

She further emphasized The Gambia’s rich diversity across culture, ethnicity, gender, religion, abilities, and perspectives, underscoring that these attributes are strengths to be embraced rather than challenges to be overcome.

“For diversity to reach its full potential, it must be paired with inclusion a deliberate and conscious effort to ensure every voice is heard, every individual valued, and every perspective respected,” she explained.

Mrs. Faye reminded lawmakers that, as representatives of diverse constituencies urban and rural, young and old, affluent and marginalized they must ensure that policies address the unique experiences and needs of all citizens.

“When policies fail to account for this diversity, they risk excluding people, deepening inequality, and eroding trust in governance,” she cautioned. “Conversely, inclusive policies build bridges, foster unity, and create opportunities for all.”
