Africa-Press – Gambia. The National Deaf Football Team and its officials are appealing for financial support to represent The Gambia at the 13th Edition of the West Africa Deaf Football Championship and the 3rd Athletics Championship, set to take place in Nigeria from August 18th to 31st, 2025.
The National Deaf Association is calling on the Government of The Gambia, the Ministry of Youth and Sports, the National Sports Council, the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Welfare, private sector organizations, business leaders, civil society, and development partners for support to help make this ambitious journey possible.
“This is not just about sports. This is about inclusion, equality, and national pride. The participation of persons with disabilities in international competitions is a direct expression of the rights enshrined in key legal and policy frameworks,” the Association said in a letter shared with The Voice.
According to the National Deaf Sports Association, this matter is especially important because the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (CRPD), to which The Gambia is a signatory, clearly emphasizes in Article 30 the right of persons with disabilities to participate in cultural life, recreation, leisure, and sport. It calls on State Parties to take appropriate measures to ensure that persons with disabilities have equal opportunities to participate in sporting activities at all levels.
The Association further noted that the Persons with Disabilities Act, 2021 (The Gambia) mandates the government and relevant stakeholders to promote and support the inclusion of persons with disabilities in national and international programs, including sports.
“Your support, financial or material, can make this dream a reality. Let us stand together in building an inclusive Gambia where no talent is left behind because of disability,” the Association urges.
