Africa-Press – Gambia. The International Council of Museums (ICOM), headquartered in Madrid, Spain, concluded a three-day online training on Thursday for young museum and heritage professionals. Held from Tuesday, 15th July to Thursday, 17th July 2025, the training brought together dozens of emerging heritage professionals including 20 staff from the National Centre for Arts and Culture (NCAC), as well as representatives from private museums, galleries, and local communities.

Speaking at the opening ceremony of the training, Hassoum Ceesay, Director General of the NCAC, emphasized the significance of ICOM as a global organization that unites museum professionals worldwide.

He urged NCAC staff and other museum workers in The Gambia to strengthen their expertise through ongoing training and continuous learning in the fields of heritage and museum management.

Also addressing participants, Mamat Sallah, Acting Director of Cultural Heritage at the NCAC, highlighted the relevance of the training and expressed gratitude to ICOM for the opportunity.

He encouraged attendees to consider individual membership with ICOM, in addition to the NCAC’s institutional membership.

Throughout the three-day training, ICOM resource persons led sessions on museum management techniques, the role of African youth in heritage preservation, and ways young professionals can contribute to the missions of ICOM and UNESCO. Informal discussions during breaks also covered topics such as visitor data collection, customer care, and preservation practices at Gambian heritage sites, and using social media to promote our heritage sites and festivals.

However, DG Ceesay expressed appreciation to the ICOM Africa Section for organizing what he described as a highly valuable training.

He commended the resource persons for their excellent delivery and thanked all participants for their active engagement. Heritage professionals from Botswana, Burkina Faso, Senegal, and Benin were also in attendance.
