Ceesay Calls Barrow Administration Committed to Corruption

Africa-Press – Gambia. Information Minister Dr. Ismaila Ceesay has described President Barrow’s administration as the most committed government in The Gambia’s history in the fight against corruption.

Speaking during his weekly appearance on Coffee Time with Peter Gomez, Minister Ceesay rejected public perceptions that the government lacks seriousness on the issue.

“And sometimes I see people say the government is not serious in fighting corruption. It is far from the truth. This government is the most serious government in fighting corruption,” he said.

Dr. Ceesay emphasized that tackling corruption in a democracy goes beyond arrests and prosecutions. He said sustainable anti-corruption efforts must involve institutional reforms and preventive mechanisms.

He pointed to several reforms, including the strengthening of the National Audit Office and the introduction of new procurement and public-private partnership (PPP) laws. He also highlighted the ongoing work of parliamentary oversight bodies such as the Finance and Public Accounts Committee (FPAC) and the Public Accounts and Public Enterprises Committee (PAC/PEC).

“And this is what this government is doing. We have strengthened institutions. We have strengthened the National Audit Office. We have come up with new procurement laws,” he said.

The minister also pointed to the National Assembly’s rigorous accountability measures, noting that parliament is actively questioning ministers, forming investigative committees, and probing suspected fraud cases.

Minister Ceesay concluded by reaffirming the administration’s commitment to strengthening legal and governance institutions, describing the reforms as a sign of serious and functioning democratic governance.
