Africa-Press – Gambia. The Public Relations Officer of the Drug Law Enforcement Agency, The Gambia (DLEAG), Ousman Saidybah, has disclosed that thirty-six Gambians and two Senegalese were arrested recently over drug-related offenses within two-week period.

Speaking in an interview with the Voice Newspaper over the weekend, Saidybah, said DLEAG registered thirty-four drug-related cases in courts across the country during that time. Fifteen suspects were arrested in the third week of July 2025, while twenty-three were apprehended the following week.

According to him, the agency recently filed ten possession-related cases and two cases involving prohibited drugs, contrary to Sections 35 and 43 of the Drug Control Act, 2003.

During the same period, DLEAG successfully prosecuted eleven cases: seven for possession, three for drug trafficking, while one case resulted in an acquittal and discharge.

Saidybah added that narcotics officers seized a total of 118 bundles of cannabis over the two-week period, along with 69 parcels and 426 wraps of cannabis.

In the third week of July, officers confiscated five stones of hashish, along with 26 pieces and 25 wraps. In the following week, nineteen stones of hashish, 89 pieces, and 26 wraps were seized.

The agency also reported the seizure of 108 wraps of kush and 111 tablets of ecstasy within the same period.

Meanwhile, Saidybah emphasized DLEAG’s continued efforts to combat drug abuse and trafficking. He said the agency was actively conducting preventive drug demand reduction activities through public education programs on GRTS, Al-Falaq Islamic Radio, Paradise FM in Farafenni, and through student sensitization initiatives, among others.
