Africa-Press – Gambia. The Government of The Gambia has confirmed that three Gambian nationals who recently traveled to Spain under a bilateral labour agreement have absconded from their designated worksite.
The individuals—identified as Demba Keita from Sare Birom, and Seedia Kebbeh and Foday Marega, both from Jahally Village—were part of the first cohort of seasonal migrant workers sent to Spain through the Gambia-Spain Labour Mobility Partnership.
In a press statement issued by the Ministry of Trade, Industry, Regional Integration, and Employment (MoTIE), authorities said they were officially notified of the incident by AFRUCAT, the Spanish company hosting the workers, through the Embassy of the Kingdom of Spain in Dakar.
“The Ministry of Trade, Industry, Regional Integration, and Employment (MOTIE), regrets to inform the public of notification from the Company AFRUCAT via the Dakar Embassy of the Kingdom of Spain, reporting the disappearance of three Gambian migrant workers. The three men are among the first batch of migrant workers who recently travelled to Spain under the Bilateral Labour Agreement between the Gambian government and the Spanish Kingdom,” the statement read.
According to the ministry, the incident occurred on July 27, 2025. Since then, the workers have not reported for duty and failed to attend appointments scheduled for the processing of their Work and Residence Permits.
MoTIE has appealed to the three individuals to return to the farm immediately and comply with the legal procedures required for their stay.
“The biographic particulars of the absconded migrant workers are: Accordingly, MoTIE is urging these three Gambian migrant workers to return to the farm immediately and complete the processing of their Work and Residential Permits. We urge the public, particularly potential future beneficiaries from the opportunity this scheme offers, to adhere to the terms of the Memorandum of Understanding and give every Gambian a chance to play a part in the Programme,” the statement concluded.
The bilateral labour mobility agreement with Spain was launched to facilitate temporary employment opportunities for Gambian workers in specific sectors abroad.
