Africa-Press – Gambia. Officers of the Drug Law Enforcement Agency, The Gambia, (DLEAG) have recently arrested three foreign nationals with prohibited drugs, one was with nine-millimetre pistols and live bullets.
This was disclosed by DLEAG’s Public Relations Officers [PRO] Ousman Saidykhan during an interview conducted on Wednesday.
According to Saidykhan, Muhammed Rafique Kabir Khan, an Indian national and manager of Envy Night Club, residing at Fajara in the Kanifing Municipality was arrested at Fajara with twenty-five thousand eight hundred (25,800) pills of suspected ecstasy that were concealed in six (6) separate plastic bags. Also thirty-two (32) blocks of suspected cannabis resin (hashish), two (2) plastic bags containing suspected cannabis ruderalis [skunk] with one sachet of suspected cannabis gummies. Meanwhile, DLEAG PRO adduced that when narcotic officers further investigated Khan, they discovered two (2) blocks of hashish, two (2) wraps of crystal molly, one (1) pill of ecstasy, some quantities of cannabis sativa as well with two (2) pistols and some live rounds [bullets] at Khan’s residence.
In a similar move, Saidykhan disclosed that Quintino Djedju and Papis Djedju, both Bissau Guinean nationals were also arrested in Fajara accused of having jointly possessed twenty-five (25) blocks of suspected cocaine.
Going further DLEAG PRO revealed that the suspects were taken into custody and charged with drug trafficking-related offences contrary to section 43, dealing in prohibited and controlled drugs contrary to section 33 and 34 of the Drug Control Act 2003.
Saidykhan also stated that Khan, the Indian national was also facing another charge of ‘’use or possession of firearms” contrary to section 47 of the Drug Control Act 2003.
Meanwhile, DLEAG further revealed that in separate development, the agency from 24 to 31of last month registered eight (8) drug related offences involving nine (9) arrestees.
DLEAG records showed that one (1) of the suspects was arrested in Banjul, six (6) in the Kanifing Municipality and two (2) in the West Coast Region.
According to the PRO of DLEAG the agency also seized significant quantities of suspected cannabis sativa, Kush, skunk, cocaine and ecstasy pills.
A 49-year-old Senegalese national was also arrested by operatives of the Agency stationed at Amdalai border post. The said suspect was taken into custody for the possession of a pistol and twelve (12) live rounds. But since the said suspect was not arrested with drugs, he would be handed over to the police for further processing and necessary actions.
“Management of the Agency uses this opportunity to reiterate its unreserved commitment to the fight against drug abuse, illicit drug trafficking and related transnational organized crime,’’ he said.
DLEAG PRO advised the public to engage in meaningful activities that promote national development, peace, stability as well as the health and wellbeing of individuals and societies.
