Africa-Press – Gambia. The opposition United Democratic Party (UDP) has officially opened applications for the position of party flag bearer ahead of the 2026 Presidential race, the party announced.
In a press release issued out over the weekend, UDP said this followed a decision by the National Executive Committee (NEC), in line with Articles 11(3)(b) and 23(3)(c) of the party’s constitution.
“The application process officially began on Monday, 18th August 2025, and will close on Tuesday, 2nd September 2025,” the release noted.
The party stated that a selection committee would carry out a thorough vetting and consultation process, consistent with both the 1997 Constitution of The Gambia and the UDP’s internal rules. “The process is intended to ensure that the chosen candidate meets all constitutional and party requirements.”
The statement further points out that the official announcement of the UDP Presidential Flag bearer is scheduled for Wednesday, 10th September 2025. According to the release, UDP emphasized its commitment to transparency, inclusivity, and internal democracy in the selection process.
The party called on all eligible and interested members who meet the necessary constitutional and party criteria to submit their applications within the stipulated period. The UDP stresses that the process is a key step in preparing the party to file a credible candidate for the nation’s highest office in the 2026 elections.
