Africa-Press – Gambia. The Gambia Victims Center for Human Rights Violations Tuesday launched photo and video documentary exhibition showcasing alleged victims of ex-President Yahya Jammeh’s regime at Paradise Suites Hotel.
Addressing the gathering, Kebba Jome, National Coordinator of the Victims Center, expressed appreciation for the attendees, describing the exhibition as both an honour and an important initiative.
“The pictures displayed tell the story of the past and allow for the recognition of victims who were allegedly tortured under the Jammeh regime,” Mr. Jome said. He emphasized that the exhibition provided an opportunity for victims to be remembered, the events that occurred between 1994 and 2016 and called on President Barrow’s government to continue supporting victims and their families.
Also addressing the audience, Ida Person, Special Adviser to the Attorney General and head of the post-Truth, Reconciliation and Reparations Commission (TRRC), thanked partners and all involved in organizing the exhibition. She stressed the importance of memorialization, noting, “This ensures that future generations understand what happened in our country. That such violations never happen again and that we continue to hold annual events to honour and remember the victims.”
Speaking on behalf of the victims, Ballo Saidykhan expressed gratitude to the Victims Center and partner organizations, saying, “We are truly grateful for all efforts made to support us.”
The event was attended by Victim Centre’s staff as well as victims from across the regions, representatives from UNDP, victim-led organizations, other partners, and civil society groups.
