Chinese Doctors Perform Cataract Surgery for 200 Patients

Africa-Press – Gambia. A team of Heilongjiang Doctors from the Republic of China will carry out cataract surgery for over two hundred cataract patients in the Gambia, medical sources revealed.

The surgery project marks a pivotal role in strengthening the health sector and collaboration between China and Gambia.

The Chief Medical Director of Edward Francis Small Teaching Hospital (EFSTH), Dr. Mustapha Bittaye acknowledges that EFSTH is the biggest hospital as it receives patients from the four corners of the country.

“We are delight with the gesture by the Chinese team. The government has also play an important role in making sure that this team reach the country to assist the hospital with new system and the patients at large,” he said.

Head of Eye Unit at EFSTH, Pa Modou Colley underscored the importance of the project to enhance medical care and surgical excellence particularly in area of eye care system.

“The presence of this highly skill Chinese surgeons underscored the commitment we share towards improving health care outcome in our community. This type of surgery is based on modern technique that is used to remove cataract. It involves using ultra- sound to break up,” he explained.

The Consular of Chinese Embassy, Tong Zhan notes that the health sector is a priority between the two countries. “We began this milestone in the 1970s and we have teams in Bansang, Kiang, and Kaur,” he remarked.

He disclosed that the embassy would help one hundred and fifty doctors and nurses in Gambia to be trained in China on health matters.

“This project is important because the people who have eye problems will be cured. After two weeks of operation, the patients will gain their sight and that will be new life for them,” he said.

He thanked Gambia’s health ministry and health workers for the continuous collaboration and commitment towards the improvement of the health care system.

Other speakers included Permanent Secretary Ministry of Health Yusufa Touray and Director of Eye Care Program at EFSTH Allagie Kanyi.
