Africa-Press – Gambia. An opinion poll by the Center for Policy, Research and Strategic Studies (CEPRSS) Gambia has disclosed that majority of Gambians disapproved President Adama Barrow’s bid for the upcoming elections.
According to CEPRSS an overall results from the opinion poll indicate that a majority of respondents (55%) do not believe President Adama Barrow should contest for a third term in the 2026 Presidential Election.
The overall results indicate that if President Adama Barrow were to run in the 2026 presidential election, a clear majority of respondents—60 percent—would not vote for him, only 19 percent of respondents expressed a willingness to vote for Barrow, while 20 percent remained undecided.
“This suggests a prevailing sentiment against extending his tenure beyond the current constitutional period. In contrast, 35% of respondents expressed support for his candidacy, while 10% were undecided, indicating a notable minority still open to the idea of a third term,” it stated.
The survey outlined that since the re-election of President Adama Barrow in December 2021, national politics have been shaped by debates over constitutional reforms, governance performance, and the consolidation of democratic gains. “The government has faced mounting pressure over the pace of transitional justice implementation, corruptions, economic challenges, and public sector reforms, while the opposition has been engaged in internal restructuring and leadership repositioning,” it added.
According to CEPRSS, the passage of key legislation such as the access to information bill and anti-corruption bill has reinforced the country’s democratic credentials, yet citizens remain divided over whether these achievements are sufficient to justify a third term bid for the incumbent. “At the same time, the opposition landscape has been undergoing notable shifts. Long-time political figures, including Ousainou Darboe of the United Democratic Party (UDP), continue to command loyal support, but questions about succession within his party is gaining prominence,” the research body added.
