Africa-Press – Gambia. The United Democratic Party (UDP) has called for the arrest and prosecution of Presidential Adviser, Saihou Mballow over what the party calls “incitement to violence”.
UDP urged the Inspector General of Police (IGP) and the Ministry of Interior to immediately investigate, arrest, and prosecute Mr. Mballow over tribal and inflammatory remarks he allegedly made at a gathering in Bakoteh on August 17, 2025.
In a statement issued by UDP Administrative Secretary for Media and Communication, Tombong Saidy, the party described Mballow’s comments as “reckless utterances” that violate the constitution, his oath of office, and the principles of national unity. The UDP said such remarks amounted to hate speech and incitement to violence, posing a serious threat to peace and stability in the country.
“Failure to act would amount to complicity,” the party warned, emphasizing that the IGP and the Ministry of Interior are responsible for upholding the law.
The UDP also accused the ruling National People’s Party (NPP) of using tribalism as a political strategy, labelling it the most tribalist party in The Gambia today. The party says Mballow’s remarks are part of a wider pattern of attempts to divide Gambians along ethnic lines.
In addition to calling for domestic accountability, the UDP appealed to the National Human Rights Commission, ECOWAS, the United Nations, and foreign embassies in Banjul to take note of what it described as “dangerous rhetoric” from senior officials of the NPP government. According to the party, hate speech and tribal incitement have no place in a democratic society and must be condemned universally.
Reaffirming its commitment to peace, national unity, and inclusivity, the UDP urged all citizens to remain vigilant against attempts to divide the country. The party emphasized that The Gambia belongs to all its citizens equally, regardless of tribe, region, gender, or religion.
The UDP concluded by reiterating its pledge to protect Gambians from divisive politics and to defend the principles of democracy and unity that underpin the nation.
