Gambia Police Warns Officers against Public Criticism of the Force

Africa-Press – Gambia. The Gambia Police Force (GPF) has cautioned its officers against publicly criticizing the institution, urging them instead to uphold the discipline and professional standards required of service members.

In a statement issued this week, the police expressed concern over what it described as an emerging trend of serving officers publicly commenting on the force’s operations, particularly through social media.“Some serving members of the GPF have engaged in public commentary disapproving of police actions in recent incidents. Such conduct risks eroding public confidence and contradicts the expected discipline of serving officers,” the statement read.

The GPF further argued that much of the criticism directed at the force has been “subjective rather than objective,” which it said contributes to public misunderstanding and fosters disregard for the law. The statement singled out Superintendent David Kujabi, a former police spokesperson, as among those who have openly criticized the institution’s recent decisions.

The police warned that such conduct has the potential to undermine public trust in the force and runs contrary to the standards of discipline required of officers.“In light of this, all members of the Gambia Police Force are reminded to strictly adhere to the terms and conditions of service and refrain from conduct unbecoming of serving officers,” the statement added.

Reaffirming its position, the GPF stressed that officers must remain guided by professional ethics, loyalty, and respect for institutional processes. It cautioned that unregulated commentary and public disputes not only damage the force’s credibility but could also pose risks to national peace and security.

“Serving members are therefore warned to conduct themselves responsibly, as violations will not be tolerated,” the statement concluded.

The GPF advised that officers with recommendations or concerns should channel them directly to the Office of the Inspector General of Police through the appropriate internal mechanisms, rather than resorting to public commentary.
