Africa-Press – Gambia. Dr. Muhammed Danjo, a medical doctor and native of Basse, has formally joined the contest for the United Democratic Party’s (UDP) flagbearer position, submitting his application just ahead of the September 2 deadline.

Speaking in a phone interview, Dr. Danjo confirmed that he is a card-carrying member of the UDP, noting that while he has never held an executive position within the party, he has long been a steadfast supporter.

His candidacy adds a new dimension to the contest, which already features Kanifing Municipal Council Mayor Talib Ahmed Bensouda, Counsel Lamin J. Darboe, and veteran politician and UDP leader ANM Ousainu Darboe.

With the submission window closing, the UDP is expected to commence its vetting and internal selection process to determine who will carry the party’s banner into the next presidential election. Observers view the flagbearer race as a defining moment for the country’s largest opposition party as it positions itself for the 2026 presidential polls.
