Mouride Community Urged to Pursue Dialogue after Police Adjourn Talks

Africa-Press – Gambia. Lawyer Sabally, representing the Mouride community, has disclosed that the police have adjourned ongoing talks regarding the dispute with Imam Kuyateh and advised both sides to pursue dialogue within their leadership structures for a peaceful resolution.

On Tuesday morning, hundreds of members of the Mouride community in The Gambia marched to the police headquarters in Banjul to lodge a formal complaint against Imam Kuyateh over remarks he made in his August 15 sermon, which they said targeted their tariqa, Mouriddiya.

Speaking to the press after the meeting, Counsel Sabally reaffirmed the community’s commitment to peace despite its large following.

“The huge followership that we have—if we are inclined towards violence, we would have resorted to aggressive actions by now,” he said.

He stressed that the community does not view itself as the aggressor, but rather as the offended party, and maintained that their goal is peace.

Counsel Sabally further revealed that they have engaged the Supreme Islamic Council (SIC), which assured them it would take up the matter with the government. He also noted the apologies issued by both the government and the SIC, describing them as steps toward reconciliation.
