Africa-Press – Gambia. The Drug Law Enforcement Agency The Gambia (DLEAG), has successfully prosecuted and secured convictions in five recent drug-related offenses, according to the agency’s Public Relations Officer, Ousman Saidybah.
Mr. Saidybah made the above revelation during a recent interview granted to the Voice Newspaper.
He stated that four of the cases were decided at the Brikama Magistrates’ Court, with the fifth case pending a verdict at the Essau Magistrates’ Court. Of the five cases, he said, four were for drug trafficking, and one was for drug possession.
According to Saidybah, in a separate development, DLEAG recently arrested 19 Gambians and two foreign nationals on illicit drug charges last week. The foreigners were identified as a Senegalese national and a Canadian national. The Senegalese was arrested with a Gambian national in Brikama Kaira Kunda and was allegedly in possession of three bundles of cannabis sativa. The Canadian was arrested with quantities of cocaine.
Additionally, he went on, a Gambian woman and another Gambian citizen were arrested at the Barra Ferry Terminal in the North Bank Region, accused of possessing 982 pills of ecstasy.
Saidybah also disclosed a list of seized drugs from recent operations, which included, 31 bundles, 10 parcels, and 156 wraps of cannabis sativa, 23 pieces of skunk cannabis, 1,982 tablets of ecstasy, two medical plastics, and 65 wraps of kush, four pellets and some quantities of cocaine
Saidybah concluded by noting that DLEAG was continuing its efforts to reduce drug demand through public awareness campaigns on GRTS, Islamic Al-Falaq, and Paradise FM, as well as by facilitating capacity-building training for members of the Arts Academy.
