Africa-Press – Gambia. Salifu K. Jaiteh, a prominent businessman and philanthropist who serves as CEO of S.K. Jaiteh & Sons, has donated valuable materials to the Gambia Prison Service to improve the living conditions of inmates.
The donation, presented at the Gambia Prison Service headquarters in Banjul on Thursday, included 26 bales of clothing, valued at D208,500, and D20,000 worth of medicine. The medication was specifically prescribed by the prison’s medical staff.
Mr. Jaiteh, whose company has supported the Gambia Prison Service for over 35 years, highlighted the importance of his donation, noting that many inmates arrive at the prisons without proper clothing. He said the donation, which included blankets and jumpers, was timed to prepare inmates for the upcoming cold season.
“The government cannot do everything. It is the responsibility of every citizen to enhance the lives of others,” Jaiteh stated during the presentation. He urged other Gambians and philanthropists to support the Prison Service, commending them for their “valuable job” in reforming, rehabilitating, and reintegrating inmates with livelihood skills.
Keita Saidy, the Deputy Director of the Gambia Prison Service, expressed profound gratitude to Mr. Jaiteh. “Improvement of the prisoners’ condition is everyone’s responsibility,” Saidy said. “This shows his commitment to improving the conditions of inmates and complementing government efforts.”
Superintendent Yusupha Jabang, head of the medical unit at the Gambia Prison Services, emphasized that the donation of medicine came at a “very crucial time.” He highlighted that many inmates suffer from chronic conditions such as high blood pressure and diabetes, as well as common ailments like malaria and skin infections. “These medicines will go a long way in helping us to medically provide care for our inmates,” Jabang added.
Other speakers, including Commissioner Lamin Sowe and Commissioner Buba Jatta, echoed similar sentiments, praising Mr. Jaiteh for his continuous support.
