Africa-Press – Gambia. MC Cham Jnr., United Democratic Party (UDP) member and Business Councilor at the Kanifing Municipal Council, has dismissed suggestions that Mayor Talib Bensouda’s resignation from the party executive marks the end of his political career.
Cham said Bensouda’s decision to withdraw from the UDP flagbearer race and step down as National Organizing Secretary should be seen as an act of political maturity and foresight rather than retreat.
“Mayor Talib Bensouda’s withdrawal from the flagbearer race and his resignation as UDP’s National Organizing Secretary is not the end of his political career; in fact, it shows maturity, principle, and foresight,” Cham stated.
He recalled that Bensouda had consistently maintained that he would not contest against UDP leader Ousainou Darboe in the primaries, and by stepping aside, he had demonstrated integrity.
“From the beginning, he made it clear that he would not challenge Lawyer Ousainou Darboe at the primaries. By stepping aside, he has stayed true to his word and protected his integrity,” Cham said.
Cham also criticized the insults directed at Bensouda by some UDP supporters, saying they exposed divisions within the party.
“It is unfortunate that Talib was insulted and attacked by members of his own party simply because he expressed interest in the flagbearer position. Compare this to Ousman Sonko, who was heavily criticized but from outside his party. Talib’s treatment shows how dangerous internal divisions can become when respect is lost,” he noted.
According to Cham, Bensouda’s resignation as National Organizing Secretary was a necessary and democratic step. “His resignation as National Organizing Secretary was also the right decision, because whoever emerges as flagbearer deserves to have their own trusted team to organize and run their campaign. That is fair and democratic,” he explained.
Cham further stressed that Bensouda’s move should be regarded as a strategic repositioning, not a political setback.
“This is not a setback but a repositioning. Talib Bensouda remains one of the brightest young leaders in The Gambia. His decision today only strengthens his credibility for the future. Politics is a long journey, and integrity always wins in the end,” he concluded.
