UDP Diaspora Media Chief Resigns over Party Leadership

Africa-Press – Gambia. The United Democratic Party (UDP)’s Diaspora Media and Public Relations Chairman, Makam Sowe, has resigned from his position and relinquished his membership in the party with immediate effect.

In a resignation letter dated September 12, 2025, and addressed to the UDP Diaspora Chair, Mr. Sowe said his decision was driven by irreconcilable differences between his personal beliefs and the direction of the party under the leadership of Lawyer Ousainou Darboe.

“I have come to realize and accept that my beliefs and views are no longer compatible with the party, and hence my resignation,” Mr. Sowe wrote.

He criticized the party’s electoral strategy, arguing that UDP leader Ousainou Darboe has reached “a ceiling that he cannot cross” after failing to secure more than 28 percent of the vote in the 2021 presidential election despite what he described as “enthusiastic unity, millions raised, and mega rallies.”

Mr. Sowe further expressed doubt about Mr. Darboe’s prospects in the 2026 elections, warning that the UDP risks losing even some of its 2021 supporters.

He also raised concerns about the treatment of Mayor Talib Ahmed Bensouda in the party’s flagbearer discussions, saying the young politician was sidelined “like a second-class citizen” in his attempt to lead the party.

“I believe the same fate awaits many of us if we dare to look up to take on the highest position in the party,” Sowe cautioned.

Despite his resignation, Mr. Sowe expressed gratitude to the UDP Diaspora leadership and his colleagues in the executive for their kindness and support during his tenure. He confirmed that he would hand over all party materials in his possession, including the UDP Diaspora Media Group Forum, to his deputy, Saihou Saidly.
