Africa-Press – Gambia. Two senior officials of the United Democratic Party (UDP) have resigned from their positions and party membership, citing concerns over the party’s direction and a departure from its foundational principles.
Maimuna Gaye, former National Executive Committee member and National Assembly aspirant for Sabach Sanjal Constituency, submitted her resignation in a letter dated 15 September 2025. In her statement, Gaye described the decision as difficult but necessary, noting a misalignment between her personal commitment to inclusivity and democracy and the party’s current trajectory. She expressed gratitude to UDP leader Alhaji A.N.M. Ousainou Darboe and her colleagues for their support during her tenure.
Similarly, Khaddyjatou Njie, former 1st Vice President of the UDP Female Wing and National Executive Committee member, also resigned with immediate effect. In her resignation letter, Njie said that after extensive consultations with her family and community, she concluded that remaining in the party no longer served her interests or those of her constituents. She cited integrity and a commitment to truth as guiding factors in her decision, while extending best wishes to her former colleagues and the party.
The resignations of Gaye and Njie follow those of the National Campaign Manager, Karafa Sonko, and other executive members last week, signaling a wave of departures that some observers say reflect growing internal concerns within the party.
The UDP leadership has yet to issue a public response regarding the resignations.
