Four Youths Arrested over Protest against Auditor General

Africa-Press – Gambia. The Gambian police on Monday arrested four youths who attempted to hold a press conference outside the National Audit Office in protest against the removal of Auditor General Modou Ceesay earlier in the day.

Those arrested have been identified as Kemo Fatty, Alieu Bah, Omar Camara (also known as Saibou), and Modou Camara. They were among a group of young Gambians who gathered to challenge the circumstances surrounding Ceesay’s suspension. Authorities had reportedly directed him not to report to work until further notice, while police officers at the Kanifing Police Station seized his office keys and official vehicle.

Tensions flared when police ordered the youths to disperse, leading to the use of tear gas. In the ensuing chaos, Fatty and Bah were arrested. Witnesses described Bah’s arrest as particularly violent, alleging that between five and six officers forcibly dragged him into a pickup truck.

Camara was later arrested by three men—two in police uniform and one in plain clothes—after he reportedly spoke to the media near the Kanifing Police Station.

The four are part of a wider youth-led movement demanding greater transparency and accountability from President Adama Barrow’s administration. The arrests mark another flashpoint in the increasingly strained relationship between the government and young activists.

Earlier this year, 23 youths were charged following their arrest on August 22 at the PURA headquarters, where they demonstrated against the government’s decision to introduce a data-price floor.

The removal of Auditor General Ceesay has drawn sharp criticism, with many accusing President Barrow of undermining democratic institutions and weakening checks and balances in governance.
