Africa-Press – Gambia. The National Democratic Party (NDP), currently unregistered, has announced an alliance with Sheikh Tijan Hydara, leader of the Gambia Alliance for National Unity (GANU), in a joint effort to challenge the ruling New People’s Party (NPP) ahead of the 2026 presidential elections.

“In the buildup to the 2026 presidential election, Hon. Hydara has made the bold and strategic decision to join forces with the NDP in a united effort to bring an end to the NPP government,” the NDP stated.

The coalition aims to foster unity and a shared vision for national progress, signaling what they called a strengthened “third force” in Gambian politics.

The NDP highlighted the significance of the partnership, noting that Hydara previously supported President Adama Barrow in the 2021 presidential election. “It is worth noting that in the 2021 presidential election, Hon. Hydara stood behind President Adama Barrow. Today, his alignment with the NDP is a powerful signal of shifting tides and growing momentum behind the third force,” the party said.

Sheikh Tijan Hydara, who served as Gambia’s ambassador to Cuba under President Barrow, was recalled following an altercation with his deputy, Vincent Mendy.
