Gambia’S GABECE Results Show Strong Performance in Core Subjects

Africa-Press – Gambia. The 2025 Gambia Basic Education Certificate Examination (GABECE) results indicate significant student achievement in key curriculum areas, particularly science and social and environmental studies (SES), which recorded the highest number of passes.

Minister of Basic and Secondary Education, Habibatou Drame, announced the results on Tuesday, 23 September 2025, highlighting continued gains across all four core subjects.

According to Minister Drame, 16,283 students passed science, while 17,280 passed SES—both reflecting improvements from 2023. She noted that science continues to record steady increases in credit-grade scores, while SES has maintained strong credit-level performance. “With science seeing a continued gain in credit grade scores and SES maintaining strong credit performance,” she said.

English and mathematics also produced encouraging results, with between 5,800 and 5,900 students earning credit passes in each subject. “This reflects a substantial number of learners mastering these critical areas. Overall, these results highlight ongoing progress and sustained achievements across four curriculum subjects,” Drame said.

This year’s examinations also recorded 60 students achieving the highest possible aggregate score of 6. The minister described this group as “a strong foundation of outstanding achievement at the pinnacle of the grading scale,” underscoring the level of academic excellence among upper basic students.

“This group of top performers represents a strong foundation of outstanding achievement at the pinnacle of the grading skill,” she said.

In total, 15,607 candidates nationwide attained an aggregate score of 42 or better, a marked increase from 14,761 in 2024. This represents the second consecutive year of growth in students reaching this key performance benchmark. More than 53.8% of all candidates in 2025 met or exceeded this level, reflecting rising academic standards across regions.

Minister Drame also highlighted gender trends in the results. Female students continued to lead performance outcomes, with 9,675 girls achieving an aggregate score of 42 or better—representing 55.4% of female candidates, up from 51.9% in 2024. Male students also improved, with 5,932 boys (51.3% of male candidates) meeting the benchmark.

“These results demonstrate not only higher female participation overall, but also a significant level of girls’ excellence at the very top of the examination performance spectrum, signaling encouraging progress towards gender parity in education outcomes,” she added.
